What is a BCBA?

A BCBA is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. Their job is to oversee the clinical programming for each ABA client. BCBAs conduct assessments to determine treatment goals and behavior intervention plans in a variety of domains including behavior reduction, communication, social, play, adaptive, cognitive, and community safety.

BCBAs provide supervision to the Registered Behavior Technicians (or Certified Behavior Technicians) that work directly with each client. BCBAs also provide parent training to the parents to help generalize skills that are taught during treatment sessions to the home setting.

Qualifications for becoming a BCBA

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Education or related field or enrolled in BCBA/BCaBA coursework
  • In good standing with the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB)
  • Advanced skills in MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Ability to travel to multiple work sites; reliable transportation needed (proof of valid driver license & current auto insurance)
  • Develop a plan of action to improve, implement and evaluate treatment effectively

Responsibilities of a BCBA

Time for School Social Story
  • Manage multiple client caseloads
  • Create individualized treatment plans
  • Advise RBTs on clinical implementation methods with clients
  • Serve as a liaison between family and clinical director on client updates and progress
  • Exhibits clinical leadership and communication skills for RBTs
  • Collaborate closely with SLPs and OTs
  • Educates parents and caregivers on at-home skills and activities
